My poor 8310, what have they done to you?

Yuppies, you and I know them very well. How they love to have the latest technology, feel very important when they have great gadgets at their disposal, and for some reason can’t leave the Blackberry alone! They have no idea that they have doomed that phone in the Philippines, doomed it to become the next MotoRAZR in the Philippines.

I’m not talking about the people who use it for work, nor the people who actually use it as a smartphone by utilizing all the beautiful features that make a Blackberry a Blackberry like the shortcut keys, BBM, real push email, Blackberry App World and the like. These people are the victims here, the ones who use their phones wisely and use them proud but will soon feel slightly ashamed to own one once these yuppies come along. I’m talking about the people who buy a Blackberry because it’s the hottest gadget in town, because their boss has one, because Barrack Obama uses one, and worst of all, because they can use it for Facebook, Yahoo messenger, Plurk, whatever is the latest social networking craze, web browse a little bit on RIM’s crappy browser and NOTHING MORE.

These people want to stay connected all the time to their social networking things and want to receive real time Facebook notifications and be available to chat 24 hours a day 7 days a week. But what they’re doing is like using a Laser beam to slice bread, like using a 300 watt amplifier for music in your room, like driving a Ford Escalade when you’re just in the city and never drive to the mountains, it’s a waste. They’re the people who are making smart phones dumb.

The worst of the breed are the people who get the latest and best model of the Blackberry (in today’s case the Bold 9700) and use it in that manner. They have no freaking idea what it is they have and they can use it for. And what’s worse is that these people act so high and mighty because they do have the latest and best model, making other REAL blackberry owners ashamed of their own phone, and ashamed that people like them are using the newer version of their phone.

Let me tell you what these people have done:

1. Make real blackberry owners move out. What was once a cool all-in-one convergence device is now tacky and mainstream. When those kinds of people come up to the real owners and say “Hey! I now have a Blackberry too! I’m online ALL the time now, oops, one moment I have to check out this facebook notification” a little bit of them dies inside.

2. They have set the stage for the next MotoRAZR, the phone which was once cool but then became the jologs phone of the 2000′s. But this time it’s worse, they have set the stage for the Blackberry to become… the Jejemon phone of the 2010′s! Yes, I can just see it now, these phones will appear aspirational to these kinds of people and once they get their paws on it, you bet they’ll start creating Facebook status updates, plurks, and message their other jejemon friends with these phones. I really hope I am wrong with this one.

So please, if you are one of these people, get more use out of your phone, read the manual, go to crackberry.com, download a real application, do something else! Do not contribute to the number of people using smartphones for dumb things. For everyone else though, I do have a couple of recommendations if you are looking for smart phones that are great and are not Blackberry’s (we have to stay ahead of the curve).

1. Wait for the next iPhone. If you’ve read the reports on the lost and found next-gen iPhone, you already know what I’m talking about, if you haven’t, head over to this link: http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

2. Get an Android Phone. I can recommend 2 that are out on the market right now, the Google Nexus One and the Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica. The Nexus One is a no-brainer. It’s powerful, has a great camera, Google branded, runs the Android OS, what more do you want? Sadly this is expensive, it will cost you about 30,000 Pesos. If you’re on a budget, get the Samsung Galaxy Spica, it has the same specs as the HTC Hero (without the internal storage) but costs less than half of the price of the Nexus One, in the Samsung store in Eastwood Mall you can get it for 13,900 Pesos. I highly recommend it.

P.S. Yes, I am a proud iPhone user, and once upon a time I did think that the iPhone will fall prey to what I think will happen to the Blackberry, but it didn’t happen and it looks like it’s not going to happen anytime soon. Let me tell you why.

1. It’s supposed to be an iPod with a Phone, and everyone who has one, uses it in that manner. While it can do greater things like run a VNC client, use push and fetch email etc, at its very core it’s just a fun Phone with iPod features which are easy enough to use so people utilize it properly at the very least for multimedia consumption.

2. It did become cool to own an iPhone, but it was overshadowed by the people who “think” that it’s cooler to own a Blackberry without really comparing the two based on purpose but rely on their perception that the iPhone is shallow and the Blackberry is professional. These people are the same people who are ruining the Blackberry right now.

I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t been using my PS3 for quite some time and I’ve only gotten back into it in the past 2 weeks. So I have quite a games backlog to work through (at least until I finally get my R1 copy of Final Fantasy XIII). The first game I chose to get back to was Resident Evil 5. My opinions of the game haven’t changed much, it’s not as horrifying as the previous games but it’s much more action packed. I do miss the thrills and scares but the game holds its own as a action adventure/3rd person shooter. I remember talking to a friend of mine a week ago about the lack of a true survival horror game on the PS3 and hopefully something like fatal frame makes its way to the PS3.

After finally finishing the game after stalling about 70% through last time, I’m happy to finally get through one of the games in my list of backlogged games. Mercenaries mode anyone?
